About Us

Glór Mhachaire Fíolta was established with the primary aim of promoting the Irish language in the Magherafelt area. The group was established c.2015 in response to demand for Irish language classes, mainly due to the success of Naíscoil an tSeanchaí and subsequently Gaelscoil an tSeanchaí, the town’s Irish medium nursery and primary schools respectively. Coupled with a general growth in popularity of the language the demand for and numbers attending adult learning classes has surged. The group also arranges cultural and historical trips and events including regular trips to the Donegal Gaeltacht area.

Shortly after its formation, the group identified the need to develop extra-curricular activities through Gaelic for the town’s youth who were attending the schools. The idea was to break the mindset of ‘Irish is for school, English is for everything else. In 2016 Club Oige was born with the aim of providing youth club activities and trips through Irish.

In September 2024 Glór Mhachaire Fíolta, supported by An Ciste Infheistíochta Gaeilge, acquired the long-term lease for the Market Yard and its buildings which were unoccupied for the best part of 20 years. The intent was to provide the group a base from which to operate while providing facilities that the whole community could benefit from. In order to achieve this the group established a Company Limited by Guarantee with charitable status.
